The Other Side of Inertia: Building Momentum
August 19th, 2007 · Filed Under: Humor, attitude and faith · Success Toolbox
Most people have only heard about one side of inertia. The “couch potato” side, which states that an object at rest tends to stay at rest.
This is why it takes more energy to start moving, or to acquire a customer, or to get back into a good havit after a lapse into lethargy.
The “at rest” side of Inertia means that the comfort zone is pretty comfy and hard to get out of. This side demonstrates why it’s hard to pick up a new good habit, because the old pattern - the “at rest” patern - is at play.
But nothing in this world is one sided.
The other side of inertia is this: a moving body tends to stay in motion. That’s why a car going at high speed takes a lot of energy to stop. It’s already moving fast, so to put on the brakes requires a lot of effort. If you’re running downhill, just try a sudden stop. You’ll either roll head over tail or take a few steps to stop.
So what does this science lesson have to do with you telling your story and growing a following? Everything!
What is true in nature is true for you and me too.
The sluggish side of inertia is your comfort zone. You have probably heard it said that if you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. That’s you or me “at rest.” Coasting along, saying you want this or that result but not changing activity level to make it happen.
But what happens when you tap into the other side of inertia? Once you get things going, a lovely thing called momentum kicks in and you experience the other side of inertia - the moving body stays in motion unless acted upon by an equal and opposite force to stop it.
What does that mean? Say you want to kick your income up a notch. You tell yourself a great story about WHY you want that next level. You dream yourself forward and you notice each and every sign that shows you that what you want to achieve is already in your life…. Then you…
There’s more, but let me stop here for a moment. You want more money. You get a bill in the mail and declare your gratitude that you have the money to pay it. You give thanks for your home, food, electricity, indoor plumbing, your loved ones and friends, whatever you have that demonstrates the goodness in your life. These are signs of abundance, and you will fill in your own. This expands your awareness to realize that you are already on the road to what you want.
And then…remember you have been in your head and awareness so far, so there must be ACTION…you begin taking the actions that pull you up to the next level.
How many sales calls do you need to make in a day? How many appointments? You need at least one contact with your list each week so they know who you are and so they will be more likely to back themselves into your funnel. Do you have that set up?
Speaking of funnel, that means you have a number of ways to suck people in with free material, then you have at least low investment product, something mid-range and a high-end product. More about that in another post.
One of my clients discovered the power of the other side of inertia recently. I advised her to make contacts with the media so they would begin to count on her as a resource.
At first, she made a lot of calls and spent a lot of time that did not seem fruitful. “Nobody’s calling me,” she said. “Is this worth it?”
“I know it feels as if you’re not getting results, but keep the faith and keep up your activity. IT will pay off.
Then all of a sudden her hard work paid off. television and radio stations started calling her for interviews. She was in several local and regional papers and all over the media.
Did this help her reputation? Absolutely it did! And it showed her that her hard work indeed bore fruit. If she had given up, she would not have so much media coverage.
Since she stayed in motion even when it seemed fruitless, she discovered the power of inertia, and she is letting herself stay in motion. She still makes media contacts as part of her strategy.
What about you? Which side of inertia do you believe will empower you to create your story into the world?
