The center of community life for the Navaho people is the Hogan.  You can see the beginnings of one in the video I have included.But this is the principle. 

When a new Hogan is to be built, the Navaho healer moves around the land, feeling for the center point from which the Hogan will be built.  When he finds Center, he stakes it, and from that point, the proper distance is measured for the 8 walls
