Success by Association: How Mentors Empower Me to Bring Out My Greatness
August 24, 2007 |
I had an interesting email exchange with one of my mentoring clients this weekend. She was listening to one of Glenn Dietzel’s recordings about the power of having mentors and told me she had never had one (until now, obviously).
So let me share with you what I shared with her. Maybe you can relate.
When I was growing up, I really didn’t have anyone I considered a mentor. Oh, I had people who encouraged me and believed in me. How grateful adn blessed am I to be able to say that! I cherish my parents who believed in me.
but mentors? No.
I never knew anyone who was ahead of me.
I had some great teachers, but they taught me subjects. They were not mentors. They were great women…but not mentors.
One of the first people I can say mentored me was noted mythologist Joseph Campbell, though we never met. Why do I say he was a mentor? Because he was one of the people who influenced the way I thought about life the most. I encountered hsi work because of a public TV program called The Power of Myth, which I now own on DVD.
Campbell discovered, through his investigation of all the world’s spiritual paths and folklore, that there is a common story to all humanity. He even helped me start my business, in a way, because of the influence he had on my thought. Because of him, I opened my mind to all people, all races, all beliefs, all paths, and did not stay bound by cultural norms.
When I first met Glenn Dietzel, he asked who were my mentors and I told him what I just told you. He was my first mentor. I don’t know if it would have ever occured to me to invest in mentoring if not for Glenn and the Entrepreneurial Authoring program.
Having a mentor cut YEARS otu of my personal and professional developent and helped me transform my mindset so that I can become who my innate nature intended me to be and live my passion.
Now I am gratitude in motion and a living blessing and a poster child of joy.
My life became triple blessed when I met Joe Schroeder. Joe is helping me warp my mind in the right way and prosper many lives a day.
When I reflect on who I have become because of my association with great people like Glenn and Joe, my heart swells with gratitude.
When you find the right person - a person of heartfelt sincerity and amazing insight - you are wise to invest in time with someone ahead of you.
