Don’t boring titles make you pass something by?  That’s why your titles need to be juicy…

Your title must grab peple’s attention, and we’re in an attention economy.  there are a thousand things vying for our attention every minute, it seems, so how do you make your title stand out?

First let me give a quick summary of the job of a title:

  1. Grab attention
  2. Arouse itnerest and curiosity
  3. Make you want to pick up the book or read the article

So, making a juicy title can be done like this:

Twist a common phrase or popular title.  One of the books I’ve helped title is by a client, Sandra Bailey, author of Real Dogs Don’t Eat Kibble.  It’s about the raw diet for dogs.  Which title gets your attention more - the kibble title or the raw diet one?  the cool catchy one, of course!

Use numbers or statistics:  “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Storytellers” is a free report I offer that uses a number and twists a common title.

Shock: I don’t mean you have to be disgusting, and I don’t recommend doing it every time, but sometimes stirring things up can be helpful.  One of my blog posts is “The Story Lady and Harris Fellman Sleep Around thanks to Dallas weather.“  We both got stuck in the airport the same week, so there was no funny business going on, but didn’t that get your attention?

Here’s my best offbeat piece of advice for you if you want to learn how to create juicy titles - well first of all, check out the short video below (that’s not my best advice!) - but my best advice is to read the National Enquirer!  Their titles are VERY juicy.
