Is Multi-Tasking Stealing Your Energy And Your Success?
August 23rd, 2007 · Filed Under: Success Toolbox
Multi-tasking: the new BUSY.
It’s supposed to be a good thing to do 10 things at once, but is it?The story goes that to be successful, you have to accomplish a lot more in a day than most people do in a week. So far, we’re ok.
But the story continues that to get more done, we have to do several things at once. That’s where you doom yourself to failure.
Multi-tasking is one of the greatest tricksters in the world. Because you SEEM to be accomplishing so much when you’re doing a bunch of things at once.Ask yourself this question: Are you busy every day but not productive (as in not earning the results you want)?
If yes, you’ve fallen victim to one of the sneakiest thieves ever. Multi-tasking makes you THINK you’re getting a lot accomplished. Sure, you are answering emails while on a business call, but don’t you think the person on the line can tell they don’t have your attention.
Multi-tasking leads to the single biggest barrier to YOUR success –BROKEN FOCUS.
Take notes. Write that down and put a bunch of stars by it. Arrows too. Inscribe it on your hand.
Broken focus destroys you a little at a time, and you don’t even realize that’s your problem.
You’re fallen for the allure of doing more and never stopped to analyze where your time is going.
OK I can hear you now saying, “But Ronda, I have so much to DO! If I don’t multi-task, I won’t get it all done!”
Whiner. What kind of cheese do you want with that? And why are you arguing for your own mediocrity? Your own failure? How about learning from people with a 5,000 hour leveraged work week like I do?
9 Ways To Break The Multi-Tasking Habit
1. Set up 3-4 powerhouse work sessions during the day. During those times, no email, no phone calls, no distractions, no potty breaks, no get up and waste time and take 20 minutes to get a coke. These can be a half hour or an hour.
2. Group the tasks you need to complete. Make a series of phone calls. Write letters during one after another. Don’t write one letter and stamp it; write all you need to and then stamp them. Think assembly line. It’s more efficient.
2. Be PRESENT when you are dealing with PEOPLE or they’ll think you are using them and don’t care about them.
4. Turn off your email and internet. Read your email 2-3 times a day. Don’t get sucked into reading jokes when you’re supposed to be on-task. Save it for your free time.
5. Know when you’re at your best for what kinds of tasks and arrange your work accordingly. If you are more energetic in the morning, make more of your people contacts at that time. If you think more clearly early in the morning, then put your “think work” into that time.
6. Pay attention to your body! Get up and move your butt every hour. Don’t get sucked into the chair for a whole day or you’ll walk like a hunchback. Drink water. have a bottle (of water) by your desk. Have healthy food handy.
7. Make a strategic plan. One of the reasons people end up in a frenzied rush all the time is they have failed to plan. When you plan, you get more done. Sure, add in a little time each day for the unexpected, because you can PLAN on that happening too.
8. Create a system for everything in your business. Think McDonalds. Think Franchise. Think systems. Because when you think of your business as a system, you can make choices from the mountaintop looking down on where you want to go instead of being whipped around by the latest tactic. This will not only save you time, it will save you MONEY.
9. Delegate. You want to spend 80% of your time working in your STRENGTHS. That’s what people like Oprah Winfrey and Tellman Knudson and Joe Schroeder do. They have a team and the team WORKS AS ONE. Don’t fool yourself into thinking you’re the only one who can lick a stamp the right way. Decide what you can remove from your plate so that you can get more done and have more fun.
