[Innerspace] InnerSpace Author Interviews: Meet Garasamo Maccagnone
February 19, 2008 |
It’s great to be able to introduce you to author Garasamo (Gary) Maccagnone and his literary fiction novel, St. John of the Midfield.
St. John of the Midfield can be purchased at Amazon.com.
Blurb/summary of book: Georgi “Bobo” Stoikov, one of the world’s greatest soccer players, defects from communist Bulgaria by jumping from a train and escaping through the Bulgarian wilderness. Injured in his jump, Bobo, arrives in America, unable to play, but content to coach American youth soccer players in the elegant european style of play. Due to his success and eccentric ways of teaching, enemies are created, forcing Bobo’s assistant, Mario Santini, to protect him with the muscle of his Sicilian family.
Do you set writing goals and write them down?
The only goal I have is to put out a quality product every time I publish a work. Sometimes, I’ll publish multiple works in a year while in other times, I’ve published nothing through a ten year period.
Do you set goals for your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life with specific action steps and deadlines?
Prior to writing, I make sure I’m in good physical shape for the torturous routine I’ll put myself through. Preparing myself mentally simply means I must be in the mood to write. Typically, emotionally I’ve been inspired by something that triggers a creative run of ideas out of me. From there, after long hours, days, and weeks of meditation and prayer, I’ll find my way to my computer.
What aspects of your own life are woven into your book?
I can see pieces of my work life, my love life, and certainly my religious life in all of my works. Those threads are constantly woven throughout all the pieces.
How do you spark your creativity?
Something has to inspire me, like a lyric, or a scene in a movie, or a line or verse in a well-presented speech.
How do you relax?
Coaching soccer is my relaxation. Literal relaxation comes in the forms of power naps, which I take every day for fifteen to thirty minutes at a time.
What do you enjoy doing with friends?
My friends and I enjoy working together in the various sports entertainment companies we’re involved in. We enjoy it so much, it’s almost like we’re not working.
What quality do you most desire to develop in yourself as a person?
Loyalty is the quality I most covet. I want my friends, my wife, my children, and my business acquaintances to know they can count on me and trust my word.
What themes and/or issues predominate in your work?
A consistent theme would be how sin or temptation strikes and what is destroyed in its path. I’m not covert in my presentation of Catholic values or virtues.
What is better about your life now than it was 5 years ago?
I’m less ambitious – more secure with myself. Thanks to some difficult times, I’ve learned to feel good about all my little victories. I don’t take anything for granted.
What was the most important lesson you learned about yourself as a person during the writing of your book?
If it’s coaching a soccer team to a national championship, or building a company out of dire conditions, or writing a novel from some idea incubated ten years earlier, I pride myself in getting the job done. More than anything, I feel good that I can be relied on by my business partners, my wife, my family, as a person who can be counted on to finish a job once it’s started. With the book, it galvanized in me the feeling that I’m unafraid of the difficult task or challenge. That’s what keeps me going.
Thanks, Gary, for sharing your innerspace with us!
