It’s no secret that there is a lot of competition for your attention these days. Everyone is shouting at you that they have THE end-all and be-all product of the century. This means that you have to set yourself apart in this noisy marketplace. But how?

What makes you different? Is it your product? It CAN be, but often it is not. Let me demonstrate. Let’s say you are building a business around mind-body-spirit wellness and you want to set yourself apart. There are numerous wonder pills and other products in this niche, so how do you distinguish what you offer?

First of all, you need to have a true solution to a big problem. It has to be something YOU yourself created. If you just sell the fruity juice of the month (an MLM product) all you offer is what my mentor Glenn Dietzel would call “greater sameness.”

In other words, if you sell someone else’s stuff, you are selling more of the same, hence greater sameness. Glenn Dietzel rightly says, “greater sameness will never bring you different results.” So if you’re distributor number 13403958, there are more than 13 million websites and products EXACTLY like yours.

So selling someone else’s stuff and using their story and their website to sell it is not going to distinguish your tiny voice in a Super Bowl sized crowd of people yelling the same thing.

OK, so how do you know if yor product is truly different? Simple. Is there anything else like it in the world? If someone can’t make Google eyes at your product and find more of the same, then you have made a truly unique product.

Some products I have come across that are truly unique in the marketplace are:

Just a Drop: gets rid of the embarrassing odor in the bathroom after someone takes a…constitutional. It gets rid of the poop stink, in other words. There is nothing like it. It solves a problem. And it really does work.

Fuzzy Nation Dog Purses: THese purses really do look like dogs, and their creator wanted to stand out amid a salon of well dressed women. So one day she saw a stuffed animal, took out the stuffing, added a strap, and voila, she had herself a purse like no other. Adn as people said how wonderful they were, she started her business.

If you want inspiration to go for your big dream, I recommend you watch The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch on CNBC.

This is only one way to set yourself apart, but look around in your own life and see if there’s a gap that YOU can fill.
