I have a question for you.
What stories do you tell yourself about people who live in different parts of the world?
Does your reality containgroups of people who are “good” and groups who are “bad”?
No matter who may be in office, I would not want people all over the world to assume that because I am America,n I must agree with every single choice the government makes. So the question is this…Does your perception of people from whatever country take into account the difference between the government and its people?
The media tells us stories, and we see these every day.
Perhaps the most important questions I will ask you today is these:
How do you, personally, decide which stories in the media are accurate and which are slanted? And when you come across an issue that is important, do you do any research to back up your choices?
I am about to share part of a blog post from Mark Joyne, the creator of SimpleOlogy.
Mark Joyner writes in this post: “I am sure that bits of this letter will be singled out and used for the political purposes of those on the left and the right alike”
The stories we tell ourselves and the stories we share with others create realities. Whether they are accurate realities or not is another matter. So why would mark Joyner be so bold and daring as to post this letter from his friend, even knowing that others are going to twist the words and the intention in which they are being shared?
He adds…”His motivation for writing this letter, and mine for printing it, is not political - but human.”
Following is a snip from the Iranian college student:
“So what about terrorists? Don’t Iranians agree with and support groups like Al Qaida?
“I was really shocked when Mark told me some Americans think Iranians support Al Qaida and other similar groups.
“Because Al Qaida and Taliban were one of the most hated groups among Iranians - even years before the September 11 tragedy, because of what Taliban were doing to Afghan people.
“If you go to the streets here and ask hundreds of people if they agree with those groups, I guarantee you’ll receive some shocked faces looking at you wondering what strange question is that?”
